100 Black Men of Central Virginia

The 100 Black Men of Central Virginia is a mentoring organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap between African American boys and their peers.  By leveraging mentorship, successful African American male role models, and programs designed to raise boys’ expectations of themselves, we aim to make a difference in these young men’s future and instill in them a commitment to helping younger men to follow in their footsteps.  Since inception in 2009, the 100 has developed four core programs to support this mission.
  • M-cubed:  a two-week summer academy for rising 5th – 8th grade boys in Charlottesville and Albemarle focused on math and STEM enrichment.  In both 2009 and 2010 there was only one 7th grade boy in all of Charlottesville and Albemarle in honors math; this year there are 6.  41 young men completed M-cubed in 2016.  To date 100% of boys attending M-cubed in 2009, 2010 and 2011 have graduated from high school and gone on to college.  The 100 Black Men of Central Virginia won the 2013 Magna Award Grand Prize from the National School Board Association for M-cubed.
  • Ongoing mentoring:  89 young men who have been M-cubed scholars receive ongoing mentorship from members of the 100.  Kai Milner, now first-year at UVA, was named National Mentee of the Year by the 100 Black Men of America.  The Central Virginia Chapter also won the National Chapter of the Year in 2016 for mentoring from the 100 Black Men of America out of 110 chapters.
  • The Collegiate 100 at UVA:  24 students at the University of Virginia form this year’s Collegiate 100 and play a crucial role as near-peer mentors for our High School Scholars program.  The Collegiate 100 visits Charlottesville High School and Monticello High School every week Albemarle HS once per month and conduct programs to encourage and develop scholastic excellence.
  • High School Scholars:  Open to all African American HS males in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa, Buckingham, Nelson and Orange Counties with a 3.0 gpa.  Over 250 young men participated in programs last year.  In addition to the work of the Collegiate 100, the HS Scholars program includes enrichment activities like field trips to the African American History Museum in Washington, DC, college visits, topical movies and discussions and more.  Additionally, the 100 have given over $100 K in college scholarships to graduating seniors with a 3.0 gpa who have participated in our programs.
